APC bigwigs throw jibes at Lagos rally, declare  Obi ‘China trader’ Obasanjo ‘letter writer’

Governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other party bigwigs today made a show at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos for the presidential rally where they all vowed to crush the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the forthcoming elections.

The Minister for Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, who was among the first to speak at the rally, made reference to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s criticism of President Muhammadu Buhari,  saying that the president doesn’t have time to write letters.

Addressing those present first in Yoruba language and later in English, Fashola said: “The South West cannot sacrifice the position of the Vice President to become a Secretary to the Government of the Federation; that is what I hear that the other party is promising. Mr. President, I have delivered your message and the message of your government and our party to them – that ‘Next Level’ means jobs, from Mambilla, to the road projects, to the factories. I have told them that you don’t have time to write letters; you get the job done.”

In his speech, the National Chairman of the party, Adams Oshimhole, also aligned with Fashola, saying that the South West has produced a vice president who is a professor of Law and in his opinion, is more qualified than one who is a ‘China trader.’

He also made reference to the situation of the party in Zamfara State, saying that though the state held its governorship primary and the court affirmed it, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) still decided not to include the party’s candidates on its list.

“Can you compare a professor of Law to the other person who is a China trader? The PDP knows that the votes are already in our favour and that is why they are apprehensive. Take what happened in Zamfara as an instance. We had our primary and produced candidates, yet INEC chose not to obey the court judgment that favoured us. We are not worried but we know that if it were the PDP, the heavens would have come down. I urge everyone present here to ensure that the PDP does not return to power because they do not have anything to offer,” Oshimhole said.

On his part, the National Leader of the APC, Bola Tinubu, said the party would teach the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) a lesson on Saturday’s election after it had ensured that President Buhari won Lagos State landslide.

“We are not here to campaign for President Muhammadu Buhari; what we are here to do is to celebrate because APC will sweep Lagos votes and Buhari will win in a landslide. Lagos very sure is for the APC. This is a broom revolution. I will teach PDP a lesson; I will teach Atiku a lesson.

“When you go to the polling units, don’t leave. Make sure you vote APC. There are 73 parties, but we all know that the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has collapsed and the other woman’s party has also collapsed as well, so we are left with 60 something parties. You’ve heard our state chairman who had catalogued when Buhari came here to campaign four years ago, he did not make fluke promises.

“I introduced independent generating power projects in Badagry. What did Obasanjo do? He and Atiku opposed it. I went to court. Who was my lawyer in court? Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. I won in court and we started generating 300MW, the first state to do it. Imagine that was in 1999. If Nigeria was dedicated to electricity generation, you would not see Dunlop and Michelin move out of the country. Look at our roads; look at the vehicular density in Lagos alone.

“Obasanjo is the greatest rigger of our time; he’s an expired product and Nigerians should reject him.”

Tinubu also threw a jibe at Atiku’s running mate, Peter Obi, describing the former Anambra State governor as only vast in creating a ‘container economy’, rather than real jobs.

He said: “One man they call Obi in one party said he will create jobs. He has not been able to tell us how we can make brake pads for the thousands of vehicles on our roads or how we can make wheel spanners on our own for those vehicles. And he said maybe he can go and expand the port in Benin Republic so we can clear our cargoes faster. I call that ‘container economy, Obi China.”

Buhari who was the last to speak, said that his administration had fulfilled most of its campaign promises and will focus on the economy if re-elected. He also said he would continue fighting corruption and would ensure that treasury looters were imprisoned.

“We made promises in 2015 and we have fulfilled most of those promises. We have made tremendous progress in terms of security, the economy and corruption fight. I assure you that when I am elected, we would be more focused on the economy and will not relent in our fight against corruption. We would imprison those who have stolen our wealth. I urge everyone to vote for APC from top to bottom,” Buhari said.

Among governors who attended the rally were governors Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun State), Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti State), Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo State), Godwin Obaseki (Edo State), Abdullabi Ganduje (Kano State), Abubakar Bagudu (Kebbi State), Adegboyega Oyetola (Osun State) and Akinwumi Ambode (Lagos State).

The minister of Labour and Productivity, Chris Ngige and the Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi were also present, including members of the APC National Working Committee.
