CAF U-20 AFCON: Aigbogun targets win against Niger

Flying Eagles’ Coach, Paul Aigbogun has revealed that the national team will go all out for a victory in their final Group A match against hosts, Niger at Stade Général Seyni Kountché, Niamey tomorrow.

After two rounds, the Nigeria U-20s lead the way in their group with four points and even a draw would be good enough for them to qualify for the semifinals of the U-20 AFCON, as well as the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland as one of the CAF representatives.

Nigeria missed a chance to qualify for the U-20 World Cup after two matches, following the goalless stalemate with South Africa on Tuesday. In his post-match reactions after Tuesday’s game, Aigbogun told reporters: ‘’To say that we are satisfied with the result is not entirely obvious, since we have prepared well for this match, but unfortunately we came across a well-organised team and we had difficulties to break the defence wall down.”

“We wanted to win this match, but we settle for the draw. The next game will be very dangerous for us to look for a draw. We will go into that game, hoping to win as in our first match.”

Nigeria is the most successful team in U-20 Africa Cup of Nations history with seven titles won.

Meanwhile, Senegal had become the first African team to qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup Poland 2019. After the second match-day in Group B at the CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations Niger 2019, the Young Lions of Teranga confirmed their place in this year’s World Cup finals after winning their back-to-back matches, defeating Ghana 2-0 at the Stade de Maradi in Niger, following a 2-0 win over Mali on 3 February.
