World number 10 ranked table tennis star, Aruna Quadri and his compatriot, Olajide Omotayo on Friday won their matches in the opening round table tennis event at the ongoing 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

Both Nigerian lads proved their superiority over their South African and Ghanaian counterparts at the Games.  

Earlier in the day, Africa’s number one player thrashed South Africa’s Shaun Jones by 11-6, 11-3, 12- 10 points to sail into the next stage of the preliminaries.  

In a similar vein, Aruna’s compatriot, Omotayo stopped Chetan Ooka Nathoo also from South Africa in the singles category. The Nigerians won the tie by 11 – 9, 11 – 6, 11 – 6 points.

In their second game of the day, Aruna returned to beat Ghana’s Emmanuel Asante 11-3, 11-3, 11-6, Omotayo also defeated Derek Abrefa 11-8, 11-7, 11-8.

In the women’s singles category, Offiong Edem defeated St Vincent Grenadines by 11 – 1, 11 – 2, 11 – 3 points, just as Esther Oribamise beat Shanecia Delpesche also from St Vincent and the Grenadines by 11 – 2, 11 – 3, 11 – 2 points.

In the women’s doubles, the duo of Fatima Atinuke Bello and Offiong Edem sent Unica Velox and Leah Cumberbatch from St Vincent and the Grenadines packing with 11 – 6, 11 – 2, 11 – 5 points. But the Nigerian ladies crashed to the superiority of Singapore’s Zhou Jingyi and Zeng Jian. They lost by 11-7, 11-4, 11-1.

In the next round of the series, Oribamise and Edem faulted again to their Singaporean opponents. While Oribamise lost by 11-5, 11-9, 11-4 to Feng Tiawei, Zen Jian also got the better of Edem by 11-3, 11-3, 11-6 points.

The Nigerian ladies will aim at bouncing back against England today.
