FG loses N600bn annually to illegal poultry importation – Reps

The House of Representatives yesterday raised the alarm over the importation and consumption of foreign poultry products in the country, saying the Federal Government is losing over N600 billion annually to the illicit activity.
In a motion sponsored by Hon. Abubakar Amuda-Kannike, the House was disturbed that the smuggling of poultry products constituted serious health hazards such as renal and liver failures as well as several other cases of digestive and intestinal health issues as a result of their process of preservation.
But in an amended motion moved by Hassan Saleh, he called on the Customs Service (NCS), Consumers Protection Council (CPC) and other relevant government agencies to raid warehouses and confiscate poultry products illegally smuggled into the country.
“Concerned that the economic impacts on the local industry is enormous, considering that Nigerians lose about N1 million jobs and about $2.4 billion (approximately N399.4 billion) annually to importation and smuggling of frozen birds, a figure said to be conservative, with the loss actually estimated to be in the region of over N600 billion annually,” Amuda-Kannike noted in his motion.
Meanwhile, the majority leader of the House, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, his minority counterpart, Hon. Leo Ogor and Hon. Nicholas Osai sharply disagreed on an amendment to the motion.
