The newly-posted Commissioner of Police, Anambra State command, Dandaura Mustapha, has officially assumed duty after a successful handover from the out-gone CP, Garba Umar.
Mustapha who until his latest posting was CP Railway Command, Lagos, vowed to make Anambra the safest state in Nigeria not only during the forthcoming elections but afterward.
He read the riot act to criminal elements mostly cultists who have been on the rampage in Awka metropolis in recent times, warning that there would be no hiding place for the criminals while officers and men of the command who engage in extortion and any other unethical conducts would not be spared either.
He called on politicians to play by the rules warning that election day is not political rally hence the need for all political actors to know their boundaries and stick to them to avoid being caught on the wrong side of the law.
“Let me categorically state that I’m not in Anambra to support any candidate or to work for any political party. The Nigeria Police will remain focused and will help to ensure that a free, fair and credible election is conducted in Anambra State.
“Be assured that during my stay in office, Anambra State is going to be the safest in Nigeria. During the forthcoming election, I want to assure Anambra people that every electorate will be allowed to go and cast his vote without any obstruction or intimidation. No political thug will be allowed access to the polling centres too,” the CP assured.
He also addressed senior officers of the command including the heads of departments and Divisional Police Officers, warning them to be professional in the discharge their duties and ensure effective supervision of their subordinates.
He also performed his first official outing immediately by visiting the scene of last Saturday’s petrol tanker explosion at Amawbia some people were killed and various properties burnt.
The CP while commiserating with the government and people of Anambra State over the incident, said the command would synergise with the government to work out solutions to the incessant congestion of the roads in the area.
