Suspected cultist stoned to death in Benue

Rose Ejembi, Makurdi

An unidentified young man suspected to be a cultist was on Monday morning stoned to death close to the gate of the Makurdi Modern Market, in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

According to sources, the incident occurred early in the morning shortly before 8am when the market usually opens for commercial activities.

Our sources who did not want to be named disclosed that the victim might have been trailed from somewhere by some rival cult members who finally caught up with him in the area and wasted no time in killing him.

“They could have pursued him from a long distance before stoning him to death here. They smashed his head with stones and left him in a pool of his own blood.”

The incident was said to have attracted a large crowd and for sometime delayed economic activities in the market.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Moses Yamu, said he had not been told about the incident but promised to get back to our correspondent as soon as he was briefed.

At the time this report, the PPRO was yet to confirm the report.
