‘Warsaw saw war’ approach to elections in Akwa Ibom has failed, says S/Govt

The tension that gripped Akwa Ibom State political space following the defection of Senator Godswill Akpabio to the All Progressives Congress (APC) appears to gradually cleared with the state government declaring that the “Warsaw saw war” approach to elections earlier declared by Akpabio has failed.

Senator Akpabio after defecting to the APC, had allegedly declared that the 2019 election in Akwa Ibom State would be akin to ‘Warsaw saw war’ and ‘War saw Warsaw,’ a statement that has been variously interpreted, explained and even rationalised by both the PDP and the APC.

But Ephraim Inyang, Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for works, told our correspondent that whatever was planned by the opposition had failed as the state expects to have very free, fair and credible elections.

“They went to the House of Assembly, they failed. So there is evidence that in this business of election in Akwa Ibom State, God Almighty is in control; that men have a right to plan, but they have no right of execution. The power of execution of ‘Warsaw saw war’ has been taken away from man by God; it won’t work. Nothing will happen including Essien Udim; there will be normal election.

“On the 16th of February, which is just seven days away, you will see that Essien Udim (Akpabio’s local government area) will have normal election. Those things are human calculation. But by what I have seen happening thus far, nothing will happen in Akwa Ibom State. It will be a peaceful election and then the result will be calculated and those who would lose will end up in a bad situation. Nobody prays for it.

“But I want to give one guarantee; if after all the ‘Warsaw saw war’ story that came sometime in September 2018, and this is February 2019, if there has been any casualty, it has been in their camp; it will be like that till we finish the election in March.”

Inyang said the strange bed fellows in the APC who suddenly came together simply to grab power in the state were fighting for their stomach considering their recent antecedents where they were persecuted, prosecuted and enslaved by the immediate past administration in the state.

He challenged APC leadership in the state to stop beating drums of war or harassing voters to vote for them if they feel they are popular.

“I think men of wisdom don’t take such people seriously. If you know that you are on ground, your people are behind you, then you don’t need the police; you don’t need the army; you don’t need to kill; you don’t need guns; you don’t need war. Simply go tell your people that you want to serve them and they will allow you.

“So, anyone declaring war, importing mercenaries, intimidating people, if you ask me in all honesty, they are very shocked that the people have rejected them; so they are looking for external help.”

The commissioner said the petition against the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr Mike Igini, by the APC asking that he should be removed, would come to naught, just as their previous attempt to use the police to rig the election expired with the appointment of a new IGP and a new commissioner of police in the state.
