Youths laud declaration of Oct.6 as Wizkid Day by Governor of Minnesota

NAN

Some Nigerian youths on Tuesday expressed their excitements over the declaration of Oct.6 of every year by Gov. Mark Dayton of Minnesota, United State of America, as Wizkid Day.

They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in separate interviews in Lagos that pop singer Ayodele Ibrahim Balogun , a.k.a. Wizkid, had worked tirelessly to promote the African culture through his music.

NAN reports that the governor’s declaration was meant to honour the ‘Nowo’ crooner for his various accomplishments in the entertainment sector.

One of the fans, Kolawole Samuels, a student of the Federal University, Lokoja, said that the pop singer deserved even more recognitions.

He said that Wizkid had contributed immensely to the growth of the Nigeria music industry and the world at large.

He said that Wizkid’s brand of music was the most popular and one of the bestselling African brands in America now.

“I am so happy for him and the Nigerian entertainment industry.

“He truly deserves such an honour because he is the most recent Nigerian act to be nominated for the Grammy Award,’’ he said.

Samuels said that the Federal Government should take a clue from the State of Minneapolis by celebrating living legends while they were still alive.

He pleaded with the Federal Government to declare a date as the Wizkid Day in the country to celebrate the `Nowo’ crooner.

“We should not wait until our music legends are celebrated abroad before we take some bold steps to celebrate them back home.

“The Federal Government should ensure that the WizKid Day is observed on every Oct. 6 in Nigeria just as the State of Minneapolis had done,’’ he said.

Also Adebowale Asaju, a student of the Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) said that Wizkid had made history among the international community following his song with American artist Drake.

He said the song titled “One Dance” remained Drake’s most chat topping single ever, spending over 11 weeks on the billboard.

“Wizkid is my guy, this development will have positive impacts on the Nigerian entertainment industry,’’ he said.

Similarly Chaste Agada, an electronic dealer, said that the Federal Government should make Wizkid Day a reality for Nigerians.

“The afro-infusion into his songs makes him stand out and the Nigerian Government should do same as the US government because he is a living legend.

“He has the biggest endorsement deal with a multinational bottling company among his contemporaries; and by all standard he deserves every form of honour,’’ he said.

Muyinat Abe, a corps member, said the living legend impacted his success story on fellow Nigerian artists when he joined 2face and OJB Jezreel to record 2face’s debut album “Face2Face”.

“I congratulate him and wish him greater feats in life,’’ she said.
